Our Story
Built by a Referee. Trusted by the World.
Fox 40 was born from a simple conviction: a referee should never have to wonder whether their whistle will work. Since 1987, that conviction has shaped everything we make.
The Fox 40 Story
It started with frustration — and ended with a revolution.
A Referee Who'd Had Enough
Ron Foxcroft was one of North America's most respected basketball referees — on the court for Pan Am Games and international competition at the highest levels. But like every official of his era, he was at the mercy of a pea whistle. Moisture jammed them. Cold made them fail. In the middle of a crucial game moment, the whistle simply wouldn't blow. He knew there had to be a better way.
$150,000 and 14 Prototypes
What followed was years of obsessive development. Ron invested $150,000 of his own money and worked with engineers through 14 different prototypes trying to crack the problem. The goal was radical in its simplicity: a whistle with no pea, no moving parts, nothing that could possibly fail. Just three precision-tuned chambers that would produce a sound unlike anything that came before it.
The Fox 40 Classic Is Born
After years of development, the Fox 40 Classic launched. Named after Ron Foxcroft and the year he turned 40, it was immediately different. No pea. Three chambers. Self-clearing. Louder than any whistle on the market. Officials who tried it didn't go back. Word spread fast — first through basketball, then through sport after sport, country after country.
A Global Stage
The Fox 40 Classic was selected as the official whistle of major international competitions including the Olympics and the Pan Am Games — a validation that wasn't just symbolic. When officials in the world's highest-pressure sporting events trust your whistle, you've done something right. Fox 40 became the standard against which all other whistles were measured.
Beyond the Gym
The same qualities that made Fox 40 indispensable on the court — reliability in any condition, self-clearing design, unmistakable sound — made it equally valuable far beyond sport. Lifeguards, coast guards, military personnel, safety professionals, and outdoor adventurers adopted it around the world. Fox 40 wasn't just a sports whistle anymore. It was a safety tool.
140+ Countries and Still Going
Fox 40 International is now one of the most recognized whistle brands on the planet. The lineup has grown to include CMG models, the high-decibel Sonik Blast, the dual-frequency Fuziun, the ergonomic Epik, premium titanium Titan, and a full electronic range. But the original mission is unchanged: make the whistle that never lets you down. We always will.
"I was one of the top referees in the world, and the pea whistle was letting me down. I knew I could build something better — and I did."
— Ron Foxcroft, Founder, Fox 40 International
Ron Foxcroft
Ron Foxcroft didn't set out to build a whistle company. He set out to solve a problem that was personal — the unreliability of the standard pea whistle at the worst possible moments in a referee's career.
A Canadian entrepreneur and international referee, Ron used his own savings, his own determination, and years of persistence to bring the Fox 40 Classic to market. When it launched in 1987, it was unlike anything that existed. When it became the world's most trusted pealess whistle, it was a result that reflected exactly the effort put in to create it.
Fox 40 International is headquartered in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, and continues to be led with the same commitment to quality and reliability that defined it from day one.
